Accounting and Finance Careers

If you love to challenge yourself with numbers on a daily basis, an accounting finance job is suitable for you. You can help a corporation or a business run efficiently with the tools that were taught in school.

But what is the first thing that you have to do? Most firms will want you to have a bachelor’s degree in accountancy, business, economics, math or statistics, in addition to your CPA or Certified Public Accountant’s license.

You will, therefore, need to earn a master’s degree and know the current accounting software around as most organizations use the computer these times to refresh records or add new information considering that the work industry is really competitive.

For the most part, an accountant doesn’t get out of the office much when all they have to do is in front of their desk. But if an accounting company has a client, they will have to go to the customer’s place of business and do the audit instead of staying in the office.

The majority of accountants work 40 hours a week on average. But it gets lengthier during the tax season and at the end of the financial year.

Your accounting finance career can enter one of the four key fields. If you wish to be a public accountant you work for corporations, the government, a non profit organization or one person. You can advise the client on tax concerns, prepare their income tax returns and give your advisory services for running their firm.

If the accounting department you work for is relatively large, you are able to specialize, for example, simply working on the employee’s compensation and benefits.

Another is Management Accountant. In this, you will be accountable for asset management, budgeting, cost management and performance evaluation of the organization. You are supposed to analyze the financial data presented to you to support high level executives in making strategic business decisions that will effect the organization overall.

But the vast majority of accountants work in the public sector. They are sometimes used on a federal, state or municipal level and their mission is to make sure that all the money received from the public by way of the form of taxes is accounted for.

The last option is called internal auditing. The people who work here check and balance the firm or client they are working for in every aspect of the organization to ensure money is never squandered or wasted. They also propose new measures to avoid occurrences of fraud.

Graduates fresh out of college will not be granted an account or assignment on their own. They will help more senior accountants and then in a year or two be promoted to that position, before moving on to become a manager, or possibly a partner later on.

In this period you can choose to concentrate on one of the previously specified areas or change to another. Some professions have made the leap from public accounting into internal or management accounting. But it is quite rare when the opposite happens.

With your license and a college degree, you can open several avenues to help launch your accounting finance profession. So if you want to go with that, it’s there for the taking.
