Your college degree is your springboard to a career in finance

If you want to make a career in finance, you need a college degree. More specifically, you need a bachelor’s degree in math, business, statistics or economics as you will be working with data and applying these skills to make judgments and recommendations.

One survey shows there are 230,000 financial analysts and financial counselors in the U.S. You might assume there is no vacancy in the market anymore. But there is. New firms are being created and old ones are continuously growing.

If you have a degree from a college, you might choose to consider financial consulting. Here you'll be expected to provide guidance on business valuation, economic forecasts and analysis, treasury management, strategies for producing shareholder value and securities pricing.

Later on you can be promoted as financial manager and instead of advising clients you will have an opportunity to invest their money so that you can make a profit. Those that do well here make somewhere between $73k and $145k a year and with the amount of money that is given, you better deliver.

Another one is corporate finance, where your role is to monitor the client’s assets and make acquisitions whenever an opportunity comes itself.

If you wish to help your country you can issue securities, enforce the law, manage assets and give financial advice to individuals.

Money managers are like the finance manager, they buy stocks and bonds for clients and buy things from Wall Street as well. For this profession you need a knowledge of the current qualitative approaches and an acquaintance with many technologies. You will also need to be CFA qualified.

Another choice is to get a job with an insurance firm. Here you help clients get ready to deal with disasters before they occur. It’s a trillion dollar industry that’s still developing so you can still get in the game.

Of the different opportunities, many gravitate to commercial banking. You may be a bank manager, a teller, a loan approval officer or someone seeking for new accounts. This is the largest group of people employed in the financial services industry.

In any of the professions listed you need to be proficient with numbers and have good people skills. Why? Because you are dealing with individuals and if the client does not like your personality chances are they will take their business elsewhere.

After a few years of work, you can work in another organization or be bold and start up your own company.

It’s not just banking, the real estate sector is also on the lookout for financial graduates. This is because their training is helpful in the fields of property management, real estate assessment, brokerage and leasing, construction and real estate development. They are selling property on one hand and try to develop solutions to make it possible for the consumer to invest depending on their budget in contrast.

When you are dealing with other people’s money, no firm will hire someone who just graduated from secondary school or is not properly trained, thus your financial career begins with a college degree.

So if you are still wondering what to do in college or lost in your current subject, switch over because this is incredibly rewarding.
